Scientists operating the world’s biggest particle accelerator have claimed the discovery of a new subatomic particle which they have tentatively identified as the Higgs boson, which was called the “God particle” by Nobel Prize winner Leon Lederman. Rolf Heuer, director of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), told a group of physicists, “We have a discovery. We have observed a new particle that is consistent with a Higgs boson” (“Physicists Find Evidence,” Fox News, July 4, 2012). This is “a theoretical particle which combines with gravity to give an object weight.” The research was done at the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, which was created to study the fundamental physics of the universe by testing theories about “dark matter, antimatter, and the creation of the universe.” They are trying to figure out how the universe holds together, what keeps the atom from flying apart, why the fundamental laws of physics work. At the announcement of the new discovery, the unbelieving scientists applauded their own technological savvy and scientific genius and praised their New Age god substitute called “nature.” Dr. Fabiola Gianotti exclaimed, “Thanks, nature!” Making discoveries at the fundamental levels of physics is impressive but it is no different than making discoveries at other levels of the universe. Discovering atoms or protons or bosons is no different than discovering what happens inside the butterfly chrysalis or unlocking some of the secrets of bird migration in the sense that none of these discoveries explain the origin and existence of such incredibly complex things. Darwin’s natural selection explains nothing about the origin of the laws of physics or even a butterfly caterpillar’s cremaster. (See “The Monarch Butterfly” at the Way of Life web site.) For that, a microscope or a particle accelerator won’t help; you need a revelation from the Creator, which we have in the Bible. Here we find the wisdom necessary to unlock the mysteries of life, the spiritual light that explains all physical phenomena. Here we learn that Jesus Christ, the Creator of all things, is Himself the secret of the universe’s “consistency.” “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:3). “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible” (Col. 1:16). “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist...” (Colossians 1:17). “Who ... upholding all things by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3). The universe is not God, but it was created by and is continually upheld by God at every level.
