JERRY HUFFMAN, EDITOR OF CALVARY CONTENDER, DIES - Jerry Huffman, who was the editor of the Calvary Contender for 20 years, died on November 22 at age 79 at his home in Alabama. Brother Huffman retired as a computer systems analyst from NASA in 1988 and devoted much of his time to researching and warning about spiritual and doctrinal dangers that are confronting the churches. It was a far-ranging paper, dealing with such things as the World Council of Churches, the UN, New Evangelicalism, Church Growth, and contemporary music. The paper contained many powerful statements about biblical separation from the pens of men from the present and the past. Huffman included many succinct book reviews.
In the early 2000s, Brother Huffman contracted a degenerative disease and was forced to stop publication of the paper by 2005. The earliest edition of the Calvary Contender that I have dates to 1984. I came across it somewhere around that time and subscribed to it until it ceased publication. Naturally, some characterized it as a “hit piece” and as merely contentious and divisive, but that was because they didn't like what Brother Huffman was exposing! My friends, the truth has always been divisive in this dark world. The standard by which to judge preaching and teaching is not whether it is “divisive,” but by whether it is truth!!! I’m sure that Huffman was considered “mean spirited” by those who didn't like his message, but in reality he wrote compassionately and graciously, because that was the type of man he was. He was also a diligent and careful researcher. He documented everything from “the horse’s mouth.”
When I visited him in his home in the early 1990s I was impressed by the extensive preparation he put into each issue of his two- to four-page paper. I still refer to back issues for information about various things that happened in those days. Looking back on the Calvary Contender, it is obvious now that Jerry Huffman had his finger on the pulse of the incipient changes that were already leavening independent fundamental Baptist churches that have resulted in such a great “falling away” toward compromised rock & roll evangelicalism today. (Most back issues of the Calvary Contender are included in the Fundamental Baptist Digital Library and the new edition’s (November 2012) powerful and easy-to-use search engine makes searching very effective. It is available from Way of Life Literature.)
