England’s new saviour is “Roy the Redeemer,” a 100-foot-tall statue modeled after Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. With arms outstretched to the nation’s soccer fanatics, Roy the Redeemer features the face of Roy Hodgson, manager of the national soccer team, and represents England’s hope for success in the 2012 European Football Championship. Financed by Paddy Power, a betting company, the statue on the white cliffs of Dover can be seen from France on a clear day. As a dumb statue, Roy the Redeemer can no more win soccer games than he can save a soul from eternal hell. It won’t be long now before the whole world bows before the man of sin.
